Poker Rebuys in Tournaments
In the last of the series, this lesson is about Poker Rebuys in Tournaments at
Learn Poker Program.
In many poker tournaments, and in every tournament on demand, if you lose all your tournament chips, you are truly finished. The site reveals your finishing rank at the exact moment you bust out.
When you are playing at a 200-player tournament and 40 people kicked in front of you before you are evicted, you finish 160th.But not all tournaments are run this way.
Take the particular event known as the poker rebuy tournament where for a determined period of time (usually the early hours of the poker tournament), you have an opportunity to rebuy and rejoin the tournament if you are under the initial buy-in stack amount all the way down to the bust-out status.
To rebuy and rejoin, just click on the cashier button at the site interface. If your site does not use the cashier button, you can usually click the chip rack found on your table. If you rebuy, you generally don’t need to pay a registration fee. But if the poker rebuy time limit runs out, you are not allowed to take this option and busting out of the tournament permanently eliminates you.
Tournaments with poker rebuys will be specially marked on the site’s home screen with phrasing like “$17 + Rebuys” or “$15 R.” The lobby provides all necessary details on the rebuy stipulations and rules.
Poker Rebuy tourneys are commonly used in large betting poker games (pot-limit and no-limit) and are very uncommon in fixed-limit due to the fact that one or a couple of cataclysmic hands at a large betting poker game can quickly wipe you out.
The betting ramps gradually in fixed-limit games as you lose your chips slowly, so you likely don’t see add-ons and rebuys offered.
Poker Rebuy tournaments often give you the opportunity of an add-on; another method to buy more chips regardless how many you have. The add-on usually comes at a reasonable bargain rate if compared to the early buying. This option is always offered at the earliest break--typically one hour after the start of tournament.
Example of pot-limit Omaha Poker Rebuy Tournament:
You buy in at $15 pot-limit Omaha poker tournament. To play, you pay the $15 entry fee and $2 registration fee. The poker site automatically gives you to an open seat with 1,300 in tournament chips. You are not lucky with your very first hand and drop to 1,250 in tournament chips. At this moment, you might click the chip rack of the poker site interface, and for another $15 (no registration fee this time), receive 1,300 more in tournament chips for a total of 2,550. You are not allowed to rebuy until your chips count gets below 1,300 again.
Eight unlucky hands later, you are busted to zero chips. The site will then prompt you: “Do you wish to rebuy 1,300 chips for another $15?” If you agree, the site takes off $15 from your account balance without registration fee and the site hands you 1,300 chips.
If you disagree or ignore the notification and are timed out, the poker site automatically kicks you from your current seat and does not allow you to rejoin to the tourney. Some poker site may give you the chance of poker rebuys only within the first hour after signing out.
Another example:
A friend of yours makes it the whole way to the first break. When he clicks the chip rack, he receives an attractive offer from the site for an opportunity, during the break only, to purchase an additional 2,000 chips for $15, no registration fee required.
Normally you only get poker rebuys as a feature of big, scheduled poker tournaments. Add-ons are usually offered in tournaments that also have rebuys.
You should certainly find out if a tournament allows add-ons and poker rebuys before you sign up in the tournament. Examine the tournament main screen where you register, since the difference may have a telling impact on the actual costs to compete effectively.
